Acaya and Gian Giacomo
In all of the Salento area, Acaya is the only village that has preservedits original appearance of the ‘idealfortified town’, as built by the military architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya in 1535. This architectwas appointed as Royal Military Engineer of the Kingdom of Naples. Gian Giacomo designed a meticulousurban layout made up of perpendicular streets and a castle protecting the houses.
