Grecìa Salentina
The province of Lecce boasts the influence of the Byzantine culture of the Greek communitieswho settled in this area many years ago.
Six centuries of Byzantine domination, from the 6th to the 11th centuries, has influenced architectural and artistic stylesvisible in churches and crypts with Byzantine frescos as well as in griko, a unique language in the Salentine Peninsula. Griko is still spoken in towns that make up what is known as the Grecia Salentina.
Itinerary
visitors can choose from among the following towns -Soleto (Church of Santo Stefano and Raimondello Spire), Corigliano d’Otranto (De Monti Castle and Lucchetti Arch, entrance fee for the former), Castrignano dei Greci (Pozzelle Park), Sternatia (historical centre), Calimera (historical centre and Natural History Museum, entrance fee), Melpignano (historical centre and former Convent of the Augustinian), Carpignano Salentino (St. Cristina Crypt,donation).
